Cicadas Emerge Early in the Midwest
In the Midwest, specifically in states such as Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee, a natural phenomenon has begun to unfold. After a 17-year wait, cicadas have started to emerge, catching many by surprise.
The Sound of Cicadas
As the cicadas awaken from their underground slumber, they bring with them a distinctive sound. While often mistaken for locusts, cicadas are actually a different insect altogether. The annual Dog Day Cicadas, commonly referred to as locusts, are known for their evening songs in mid-July.
Early Appearance in Chicago
In the Chicago area, the cicadas have made their presence known, with some even taking to the skies earlier than expected. In the city's Beverly neighborhood, a Brood XIII cicada was spotted flying off a 3-year-old's hand, excreting a fluid as it took flight.
While the sudden appearance of cicadas may come as a surprise to some, one thing is certain – their unique sound will soon fill the air in the Midwest, including states such as Ohio and Texas, as the summer months approach.
