Jersey Takes a Major Step Towards Legalizing Assisted Dying
After a long and emotional debate, Jersey has taken a significant step towards legalizing assisted dying, with the States Assembly voting 32 to 14 in favor of introducing the Jersey assisted dying law. This landmark decision marks a major shift in the island's approach to end-of-life care, allowing terminally ill individuals to have more control over their final days.
A New Chapter for End-of-Life Care
The new law, which is expected to come into effect in the coming years, will provide a safe and regulated framework for those with terminal illnesses to access assisted dying. This move is a significant departure from the island's previous stance on the issue, and reflects the changing attitudes towards end-of-life care.
A Citizens' Jury Paves the Way
In 2021, a citizens' jury in Jersey voted overwhelmingly in favor of legalizing assisted dying, with 78% of members agreeing that it should be permitted. This verdict helped pave the way for the States Assembly to take action, making Jersey the first parliament in the British Isles to decide "in principle" to allow assisted dying.
The Assisted Dying Service
The Jersey Assisted Dying Service will provide accessible information to those considering assisted dying, as well as their loved ones and healthcare professionals. The process will begin with a written request to a Coordinating Doctor, marking the start of a carefully regulated and compassionate process.
