Deadly Listeria Outbreak Linked to Sliced Deli Meat: What You Need to Know
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning after at least two deaths in a multistate listeria outbreak linked to sliced deli meat. The outbreak has resulted in 28 people being hospitalized across 12 states, with 16 of 18 people (89%) who fell ill reporting that they had eaten meats sliced at deli counters.
What's the Risk?
Listeria monocytogenes, a type of listeria bacteria, is a serious foodborne pathogen that can cause listeria meningitis, a life-threatening infection. Pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of developing severe illness.
Prevention is Key
To minimize the risk of listeria infection, it's essential to handle and store deli meats safely. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling deli meats, and make sure to store them in a sealed container at a refrigerator temperature of 40°F (4°C) or below.
The Investigation Continues
The CDC is still investigating which specific deli meats are affected and has not yet issued a listeria recall. As the investigation continues, it's crucial to stay informed about any updates and take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Stay safe, and stay informed!
